President's Report to Members

This is one of my semi-regular updates on what is happening with FAUW. It is timely as we have recently received the results of the vote on the proposed changes to the performance evaluation provisions (now approved by the Board of Governors) of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and can now move forward to other topics. Thanks very much for your participation in this exercise.

Memorandum of Agreement

The MoA remains one of the primary focuses of our activities as it clearly has a number of flaws that affect the terms and conditions of employment. The Faculty Relations Committee (FRC) has agreed to consider major issues brought forward by FAUW one at a time. It is a lengthy process with many eyes on drafting because it is simply too easy to make mistakes. After agreement is reached at FRC, the next step is for members to vote and then changes are presented to the Board of Governors. We expect another round of changes to come before the membership in the late winter 2017 and will keep you updated at the general meeting in December.

FAUW communications

We hope you will have begun to notice the significant improvements to the FAUW communications strategy. Laura McDonald along with Elise Lepage have done a lot of work to ensure that we communicate well and effectively. As always, suggestions are appreciated. In the meantime, we have several important meetings on the agenda – see below.

New sexual violence policy

You may well have read about the passage of the Sexual Violence Policy (42) at the Board of Governors and the delay in the approval of the protocols/procedures. FAUW and others argued for the delay of the latter because the current version had elements with which we could not agree; specifically provisions ran up against our Memorandum of Agreement. This policy and policy 33 (ethical behaviour) currently under review raise difficult but manageable balancing acts.

We are working to get the protocols/procedures ready for approval by the Board of Governors in early December, and a complete review of both the policy and procedures will begin January 1, 2017.

Student evaluations of teaching

We will be following the report of the provost’s Course Evaluation Project Taskforce (CEPT) closely as it is presented to the community for discussion. We urge all of you to do the same.

New budget model

The provost is beginning a communication campaign re: the university’s new budget model. We have a small working group drawing from several Faculties for this that will be advising FAUW. Much does not directly come within our bailiwick but we want to ensure we are well informed about that which does.
